STI & BBV Screening

Sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses affect people of any  age, gender, sexual orientation, culture and people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Some sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses will have signs (physical presentations) including; rash, ulcers, sores, lumps, discharge, and symptoms (feeling different to normal) unwell, fever, odour, stinging or burning when urination or painful intercourse.

More often than not STIs and BBV can be asymptomatic (no symptoms) and no visible signs of infection making them easy to pass on before the person is aware they have an STI or BBV emphasizing the importance of routine screening between sexual partners or as soon as signs or symptoms occur.

STI and BBV screening can be performed with a urine sample or swab and a blood test,  results usually takes 2-3 and most STIs and BBV are treatable or curable, however this does not mean you will not contract them again in the future or if your partner is not also treated.

Contraception

Contraception is important to prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduce the risk for sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses.

Not all contraception is 100% effective and not all contraception options are suitable or practical for everyone, if contraception is not used correctly it will reduce effectiveness or become ineffective all together.

Not all forms of contraception prevent or reduce the risk for contracting STIs and BBV, only barrier protection can prevent or reduce the risk for unplanned pregnancies and STIs and BBVs.

If contraception is not used and there is a risk for pregnancy,
emergency contraception can be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex and does not require a prescription, however hormonal contraception can not treat STIs or BBVs.

Fertility & Family Planning

Fertility is important for individuals and couples who are planning to have a family, fertility can be affected by many factors including; age, genetics, chronic diseases, drugs and alcohol, sexually transmitted infections and general health status.

Common fertility issues that affect women can prevent ovulation (egg release), sperm fertilizing the egg (damaged egg or hostile environment), egg implantation in the uterus (womb) and miscarriage (fertilised egg/fetus detachment and death).

Common fertility Issues that affect men can prevent sperm production, testicular and reproductive organ injuries, erection and ejaculation difficulties, infertile sperm (weak or damaged
), spermicides and hormonal contraception (known or unknown).

Infertility will need to be investigated to identify the exact cause/s and discuss fertility and family planning options, in some cases a referral to a fertility clinic may be required to discuss all available options to conceive and start your family.
